BEC - Projects

The School Environmental Area

Our first project was setting up an Environmental area in our school grounds, it has been really

successful . It you would like to find out more about it, click here and it will take you to the

Environmental section of this web-site.

The Church Yard of St. Michael and All Angels Bassingham

After setting up our school environmental area we decided to carry on this interest into the

village by setting up an area behind the church.

Our aims were...

This area is still there for people to enjoy.

Boxing Day

Our next attempt to create wildlife areas within the community was "Boxing Day". Staff,

children, parents and members of the community spent a Saturday morning in school making

bird- boxes. More than 50 were made and distributed around the surrounding villages, complete

with fact sheet. All materials were "begged" from various individuals and firms. We monitored

the boxes to find out how many were occupied. Most of the boxes are still being used.

If you want to know how to make a bird box , then click here and it will take you to an

instructions page.

BEC - What's happening now!

Playground markings

BEC has set a task for the pupils in school to design a some new markings for the

playground. We will present a prize for the winning design. We hope that they will make up their

own rules for the games and perhaps we could make a booklet of these ideas.

The designs will be judged by the BEC committee and the teachers. They will choose the

most exciting design which will benefit most pupils.

We are going to use the money we've raised from managing the recycling bins in the village car

park. This is about £350!

Seating and Litter Bins

We're hoping to approach local businesses for sponsorship.

Mrs Clough, who was a teacher at school, bought the school a seat for the pupils to sit on. We

are hoping to get some more so that people will not be squashed while sitting down!

Mrs. Ash who was our school secretary has just retired, she bought us a litter bin in the shape

of a Hippo as a present.

We have called it Helen the Hungry Hippo. Helen the Hungry Hippo is absolutely massive and

about 125 cm tall which is bigger than most of the reception children. Helen always makes

people smile because it's mouth is so big and happy!

We want to approach local businesses to see if they will sponsor a bin or another seat.

Coffee Morning and Sunflower Competition

Each year we organise a sunflower competition.

On a Saturday morning we invite people to come to the school for a little coffee morning. They

bring their spare garden plants to swap with other people. We also have a sunflower

competition for everyone to join in on. Everyone plants 2 sunflower seeds each. They take

them home, and when they've germinated, they plant them in their gardens. At the end of term

they bring their measurements back to school and we reward a prize to the tallest sunflower.

The sunflower heads provide seeds for the birds in the Autumn and Winter.
